Uses
The installation of pavement provides many functional uses within the landscape. As a more durable and static surface, it can withstand pedestrian and vehicular traffic and weather conditions. However, if improperly constructed, pavement can cause erosion.
In many outdoor environments, the ability to direct users through the space is critical to the design objective. By configuring pavement in certain ways and using different patterns, the direction and indication of movement can be obtained. Pavement can connect focal points, nodal areas, and access points. For example, the creation of linear paths can direct movement through parks or can lead to the entrances of a home. However, in some outdoor spaces where multiple access points are desired, linear paths may not be adequate, but a plaza or patio may be sufficient.
Not only does pavement suggest direction, but it can be designed to create rhythm, unity, and influence the scale of the space. The rhythm of a space can be directly related to the pavement design and configuration. For example, narrow paths create fast movements, while wider paths allow more relaxed movements. The scale of the space can be directly influenced by texture, patterns and size of paving materials. Small patterns in the pavement create a more intimate space, while large patterns create expansive spaces. Finally, in areas with many different elements, including site furnishings and buildings, pavement patterns and materials can help unify and act as a natural setting within the design of the landscape.
